AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Will Probably Be Marvel's Longest Running Movie to Date

Marvel Studios recently showcased footage from the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War at both D23 Expo and San Diego Comic-Con. While we wait for Marvel to officially release some footage (which will likely be a few months), we have an idea of what the film’s runtime will be.

Speaking with Collider, co-director Joe Russo says that, while a final runtime has yet to be determined, Infinity War will probably be at least two and a half hours long. “The current cut is over two and a half [hours]… Most of it’s a movie you could show, but there’s still a lot of work left to be done, I still have a couple of scenes that we haven’t finished from Avengers 3 that I’m shooting in the next few months with my brother, and it’s certainly gonna be a film that lives in the two and a half hour, two and a half hour-plus range” Russo also suggests that Avengers 4 will likely have a similar length, but since shooting hasn’t started yet, it’s too early to say for sure.

Russo says that a longer runtime for these movies is essentially, given their culmination of ten years’ worth of films and narratives. “We’ve gotta take 10 years of storytelling in this Marvel narrative experiment that’s been going on since Iron Man, and we have to take all these disparate tones, disparate themes, motivations, and we have to pull them together in a unified narrative and write the final chapters of the book. There’s no way you could do that with all these characters in under that running length.”

If the two and a half hour runtime sticks, that will make Infinity War the longest running Marvel movie to date. Currently, that title is held by Captain America: Civil War – also made by the Russo brothers – which ran for 2 hours and 27 minutes. Both Avengers movies ran for a little over 2 hours and 20 minutes each, while other Marvel films typically run about two hours each.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
