FEATURE: Marvel's Five Biggest Moments From San Diego Comic-Con 2017

While Netflix’s first three Marvel shows were all met with glowing reviews, Iron Fist was not. Despite receiving a lot of viewers, Danny Rand’s live action debut had mostly negative reviews from critics, while fans had mixed feelings. So, there was speculation as to whether Iron Fist would join its fellow Marvel shows and be renewed.

Fortunately (?), at SDCC, it was confirmed that Netflix has renewed Iron Fist for a second season. Few plot details are known for season two, but it will likely deal with the cliffhanger from the first season and Danny’s time in The Defenders. Also, Simone Missick’s Misty Knight is joining the cast, setting up Daughters of the Dragon with Colleen Wing. While a release date is unconfirmed, filming is expected to begin “soon.” Oh, and a new showrunner has been announced.

After the massive failure of 2015’s Fant4stic, the future of the Fantastic Four franchise was very unclear. It was rumored that Fox was developing a more kid-friendly reboot starring Franklin and Valeria Richards, while many fans have been hoping that Marvel Studios would regain the rights. At SDCC, we received an answer, but not the one you would expect.

During the Legion panel, creator Noah Hawley revealed that he was developing a movie starring Doctor Doom for Fox. He is writing the script with an eye to direct. Few other details are known, but if executed properly, this could be a really unique way to revive the Fantastic Four franchise. It’s also an opportunity to return Victor von doom to his former glory. So, fingers crossed.

The Defenders unite Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in a hotly anticipated miniseries that is a culmination of all of the Netflix shows so far. It shouldn’t be at all surprising that it had one of the more memorable panels at SDCC this year.

During the panel, we got a sick new trailer, while the lucky attendees got to see the first episode. They also showed off a first look at the next Marvel Netflix series, The Punisher, but that footage hasn’t been released online…yet. But needless to say, the panel presentation has gotten everyone more hyped than ever to see The Defenders next month.

At the main Marvel Studios panel, Kevin Feige wasted no time to drop news bombs about two of their next movies, Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel. The Ant-Man sequel has cast Michelle Pfieffer as Janet van Dyne, aka the original Wasp, while Laurence Fishburne will play Dr. Bill Foster, who becomes Black Goliath in the comics. It was also confirmed that Walton Goggins and Hannah John-Kamen will play Sonny Burch and The Ghost, respectively.

Moving on to Captain Marvel, it was revealed that the movie will take place in the early 1990s, and Nick Fury has a big role. Also, the film is the long-awaited MCU debut of the Skrulls. Marvel Studios started out its panel with a lot of brand new information about its movies, serving as a strong beginning to a great presentation.

And finally, Marvel Studios used its panel to promote its next three movies. The studio showed off an awesome new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, which was also released online. The trailer offers a little more insight into the plot, teases Thor’s unlimited power, has talking Hulk, and even gives a first look at Surtur. The trailer does a fantastic job promoting the movie, which hits theaters in November.

Moving on, Marvel also showed off new footage from Black Panther, with the cast in attendance. The footage wasn’t released online, but at least we got a new poster. And finally, Marvel screened its Avengers: Infinity War footage from D23 again. Plus, concept art posters for all three movies were given out at the convention.

Marvel Studios did a fantastic job showing off its next five films at SDCC. And for that, they’re #1 on our list.
