Matt Reeves Addresses Possibility of a New BATMAN Trilogy

So far, Warner Bros. has only confirmed one solo movie for Ben Affleck’s Batman, following his role in this fall’s Justice League. But, if The Batman is a big hit, then sequels are inevitable. Would Matt Reeves be open to exploring Batman in a whole trilogy? He shared his thoughts on the possibility in an interview with Fandango.

Reeves admits that he already has some ideas for a potential Batman trilogy, but he clearly wants to focus on making a good first movie before committing to sequels. “I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start… you have to start with one. You know, you have to start with a story that begins something. And I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of [Planet of the] Apes was already planned out, because it simply wasn’t; it’s one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you’ve got from A to Z is not something that existed.”

Reeves goes on to explain how the Planet of the Apes films’ stories evolved, saying that, even though they were intended to be part of a trilogy, they really weren’t, due to the one-story-at-a-time approach. Regarding Batman, Reeves says that that property “…is a kind of ambition for a series of stories, but really the most important thing is gonna be to tell a vital first story.”

So, basically, Reeves is open to creating a Batman trilogy, but he wants to make sure that The Batman provides a good foundation to build off multiple stories. Hopefully, The Batman will be a huge success and the studio moves forward with a new trilogy starring the Caped Crusader.

The Batman is expected to begin production some time next year, presumably for a 2019 release.
