Matt Reeves Teases THE BATMAN’s “Very Emotional” Story and Influence from Christopher Nolan

Director Matt Reeves has been attached to direct DC Films’ The Batman since earlier this year, but he has been mostly focused on finishing and promoting his most recent film, War for the Planet of the Apes. But with that movie hitting theaters next week, Reeves will soon shift his complete focus to the Dark Knight’s next standalone film.

In recent interviews, Reeves has offered a few teases for what type of Batman movie he wants to make. He is interested in exploring a personal story completely from Batman’s point-of-view, taking influence from Alfred Hitchcock’s style of filmmaking. He also has a desire to tell a noir-driven story that utilizes Batman’s detective skills. Now, Reeves has shed a little more light.

Speaking with Yahoo! Movies UK, Reeves wants The Batman to have an “emotional” storyline, again comparing Batman to Planet of the Apes protagonist Caesar. “It’s my hope to tell a very emotional Batman story.” He elaborates, “I think that the metaphors of both of the franchises enable you to tell stories that have deep emotional resonance. That’s actually what excites me about it. It’s interesting because I was obsessed with both as a child, and yet there is something potentially very adult about what you can explore under the cover of that fantasy. That is what draws me to it, and that’s what I’m excited about.”

Before Ben Affleck’s Batman made his presence known in the DC Extended Universe, filmmaker Christopher Nolan told his own Batman story in The Dark Knight Trilogy. To this day, those films are among the most critically acclaimed in superhero movie history, transcending the genre and not being chained to today’s cinematic universe craze.

Reeves says that he has been influenced by Nolan, praising him for allowing his perspective as a filmmaker shine in a series of big budget movies. “What I love that [Nolan] did was that he took the genre seriously. What studios are willing to make at the moment is a very, very narrow band of films. What I discovered is that this genre has the potential to be about something more. You can use the metaphors of the genre to talk about [a lot].”

The Batman is expected to begin production sometime next year, presumably for a 2019 release.
