SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Swings to Estimated $117 Million Opening Weekend

Marvel Studios has brought everyone’s Friendly Neighborhood Web-Slinger back on top with Spider-Man: Homecoming, the reboot that finally puts Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film has received strong positive reviews from critics, while audiences gave it an A on CinemaScore. Now, the movie is a big moneymaker.

Homecoming easily won the top spot this weekend, grossing an estimated $117 million in North America. This gives it the second biggest opening in the Spider-Man franchise, behind 2007’s Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million). This is also the third biggest opening of the year so far, behind Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million).

Overseas, Homecoming grossed $140 million. This brings its worldwide opening to about $257 million. The film’s budget is only $175 million, one of the lowest in Spider-Man history, so it should turn a very easy profit for Sony. (Marvel isn’t getting the box office profit for this movie, but benefits from merchandising sales and Spidey’s inclusion in the MCU.)

Homecoming will face some competition over the next few weeks, as War for the Planet of the Apes and Dunkirk are on the way. But Homecoming‘s strong word-of-mouth and appeal to younger audiences should help it maintain good legs.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
