The Astonishing Marvels Crew Weighs In on SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

After five films based solely at Sony, Spider-Man has come home. The studio has partnered with Marvel to integrate the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU Spidey’s first movie, subtitled Homecoming, is now playing in theaters. The film has received mostly positive reviews from critics, while fans and audiences love it too. It has proven to be a box office hit, having a strong opening weekend of about $117 million. As of this writing, the movie has grossed $579.4 million worldwide.

Today, some members of the Astonishing Marvels staff have decided to share individual thoughts on Spider-Man: Homecoming. What did we think of the film? You can find out below.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
is a much-needed return to form for the Spidey franchise. It offers a fresh new take on the Web-Slinger while still sticking to his comic book roots. The movie has some of Marvel’s best humor to date, while Tom Holland and Michael Keaton’s performances are perfect. And Homecoming is just so much fun, with engaging action, shocking plot twists, and a story with smaller stakes. Spider-Man is home, indeed.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is everything the Wall-Crawler needed. After the negative reception to The Amazing Spider-Man series, Sony and Marvel took the character back to square one. This time with the Avengers backing him up. Tom Holland is great as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Bringing a ton of heart to the character. The villain is one of the MCU’s best; Michael Keaton brings this film to a whole new level. The filmmakers chose not to tell Spider-Man’s origin, and they barely even hint at it. This does cause a few minor problems story-wise, but it’s not enough to affect the fun that you’re having watching this movie. Homecoming is the perfect first step in Spider-Man’s story. Hopefully, the sequel builds on the solid foundation that was laid.MJ (4/5)

Spider-Man: Homecoming was a pretty spectacular movie. It was great to see a high school Peter Parker again. Humor was well timed, acting was pretty good. I enjoyed the script, and Vulture was a surprisingly fresh villain, and a good modern take for this incarnation. Overall, not my favorite Spider-Man of the three sets of movies, but it was pretty good. – Katie (3.5/5)

Spider-Man: Homecoming is both a superhero movie and a coming-of-age high school comedy a la John Hughes. It succeeds at being both with Tom Holland’s charm carrying the film. There’s lots of genuinely funny moments, quirky side characters, and web-slinging fun. It even happens to feature one of Marvel’s best villains to date in Michael Keaton’s Vulture. It’s an all-around good time, and a great solo debut for Spidey in the MCU. – John (4.5/5)
