Warner Bros. May Launch Big Oscars Campaign for WONDER WOMAN

Few could have predicted the huge success of DC Films’ latest movie, Wonder Woman. The film has earned rave reviews from critics, while it has resonated with audiences in a way very few superhero movies, if any, ever have. Currently, Wonder Woman has grossed $781.9 million worldwide. A sequel was recently dated for December 2019. Now, Warner Bros. may be campaigning for the movie at the Oscars.

According to Variety, WB is planning to launch a “formidable” awards campaign for Wonder Woman. Specifically, the studio intends to campaign for the film to be nominated for Best Picture, as well as Best Director for Patty Jenkins, at next year’s Academy Awards. A comic book movie has never been nominated in either category, so if Wonder Woman somehow winds up in one of them, history will be made.

Comic book movies typically don’t receive nominations in the big Oscar categories. If they do get any nominations or wins, it’s usually in smaller categories. For example, Spider-Man 2 won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, while last year’s Suicide Squad took home the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award. Of course, the biggest win for superhero movies came in 2009, when Heath Ledger posthumously won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Personally, I would be shocked if Wonder Woman is actually nominated for Best Picture or Best Director. Again, however, the film has made more of a cultural impact than other CBMs in recent years, so that could give it an edge. But if it only winds up in the technical categories, along with every other CBM nominated, don’t be surprised.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
