Director Marc Webb Reflects on His SPIDER-MAN Experience and Scrapped SINISTER SIX Plans

Before striking a deal with Marvel Studios, Sony attempted to launch a cinematic universe in the Amazing Spider-Man series. The second film was full of world-building in preparation for a Sinister Six movie, among other spin-offs. However, Amazing Spider-Man 2 underperformed critically and financially, leading to Sony scrapping its plans and teaming up with Marvel for another reboot.

In an interview with Den of Geek, director Marc Webb reflects on his experience with the two Amazing Spider-Man movies, as well as what they were planning for the future.

Webb denies being “pushed around” by Sony while making the movies, and he takes full responsibility for how they turned out. He instead blames the accelerated schedules. “I think I’d just take more time making those movies. But that goes into accepting, when you sign up for it, making clear what you’re willing to accept. I didn’t know how to build a movie like that when I was starting off. So I think I’d be more careful about that now.” Ultimately, however, Webb says he really enjoyed working on the movies.

Talk then turns to what future movies would have covered. Webb confirms that Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn would have been resurrected for Sinister Six, which was planned before a third Amazing Spider-Man. “Chris Cooper was going to come back and play the [Green] Goblin. We were going to freeze his head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it, but I think maybe we were thinking too far ahead when we started building in those things. But it was a fun exercise. I look back very fondly on those days.” Osborn would have been the leader of the Sinister Six, while Vulture – the villain of this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming – was also being discussed.
