Gavin O’Connor to Direct SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel for Warner Bros.

Following David Ayer’s exit, Warner Bros. began the search for a new director to tackle the Suicide Squad sequel. Mel Gibson topped the shortlist earlier this year, while Jaume Collet-Serra was the frontrunner for a while. Well, now, it looks like the search has come to an end.

According to Deadline, Gavin O’Connor has been hired to direct Suicide Squad 2. He is also writing a new draft for the sequel. O’Connor most recently worked with Ben “Batman” Affleck on WB’s The Accountant, making him a logical addition to the DC Extended Universe.

Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto are attached to reprise their roles from the first movie. Per Variety, the sequel may not begin production until fall 2018 at the earliest, due to the actors’ busy schedules. At this point, the movie will probably be released in the second half of 2019, if not 2020. But a release date has yet to be confirmed.
