JUSTICE LEAGUE Experiences Box Office Doom with an Underwhelming $96 Million Opening Weekend

DC Films’ Justice League has had many struggles in its launch, from lukewarm reviews by critics to extensive behind-the-scenes issues. While most of the recent DC movies haven’t been well received by critics, they have all earned a lot of money. However, that doesn’t look to be the case this time.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Justice League is opening this weekend with an estimated $96 million. For any other movie, that’d be pretty good. But for a big blockbuster starring some of the world’s most iconic superheroes and with a nearly $300 million budget? That’s pretty bad. It also marks the lowest DC Films opening to date; every other installment has opened to at least $100 million.

Overseas, Justice League opened to $185.5 million, bringing its worldwide total to $281.5 million. This includes a $51.7 million in China, serving as the biggest Warner Bros. debut in that nation after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($55 million).

So, basically, the film will have to rely on international grosses and strong legs to turn a profit. It reportedly has to make $700-750 million just to break even. Fortunately, audiences who have seen it seem to like it, while Thanksgiving week could help it a lot.

But even then, this is a very disappointing opening weekend for Justice League. How this will affect DC Films’ future plans is unconfirmed. Hopefully, the film will maintain good legs and generate enough money in the next few weeks. But, we’ll see.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as we have them.
