Marvel Entertainment: 2017 in Review – Part 3 [Animation and Video Games]

To say the least, 2017 has been yet another huge year for Marvel Entertainment, whether it’s in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or elsewhere. Several movies hit theaters, with many more still in development. The television shows keep going strong. And we’ve had news on the animation and video game compartments.

In this third and final installment of our annual reflection, we look back at the biggest news, announcements, and more surrounding Marvel’s animation and video game projects.

On Disney XD, Marvel continued to air two animated shows and launched a third. Avengers Assemble entered its fourth season, with a fifth season (focused on Black Panther) announced. In season four, T’Challa forms a new team of Avengers to rescue the original members from the Cabal. This new team includes Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, and Vision. Guardians of the Galaxy aired its second season this year, while season three (subtitled “Mission Breakout”) has already been announced.

Following the conclusion of Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel quickly launched a new series on Disney XD. Simply titled Spider-Man, the show revisits Peter Parker’s origin and how he grows into his powers. He also fights many of his iconic villains, such as Venom. In addition to the main shows, Marvel aired several new shorts on the network – some focused on Rocket Raccoon and Groot, and some focused on Ant-Man.

This year, Marvel announced a new animated franchise focused on its female characters. Titled Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, the franchise will include a movie and shorts starring Spider-Gwen Ghost Spider (Dove Cameron). The series also stars Chloe Bennet as Quake and Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, reprising their respective roles from television shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming New Warriors.

This year, we learned a lot more about Sony’s animated Spider-Man theatrical film, now titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, with the supporting cast including Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali, and Bryan Tyree Henry. We recently got a first trailer, which teases Miles’ discovery of the Spider-Verse and more.

Meanwhile, on the heels of his big screen success, Wade Wilson is coming to animation. FXX is planning an animated Deadpool series produced by Donald Glover. The 10-episode series will be targeted towards adults, and it is expected to air sometime next year. No details on cast or anything else just yet.

Switching gears to video games… This year, we got a look at gameplay from Sony’s PlayStation 4-exclusive Spider-Man game. TT Games launched LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (and a Deluxe Edition), featuring many more of your favorite Marvel characters. The Marvel vs. Capcom franchise made a comeback this year with a new game, subtitled Infinite. Square Enix is teaming up with Marvel on The Avengers Project. Telltale launched a new series based on Guardians of the Galaxy. And Marvel announced a new VR game for Oculus.

As you can see, Marvel has been very busy on the console gaming front, releasing several titles and developing even more. We can’t wait to see what’s coming next year.

Thanks for reading our annual reflection of everything in Marvel Entertainment. As always, stay tuned for more as we have it.
