BLACK WIDOW Movie Finally Going Forward at Marvel with Screenwriter

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has been a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in multiple films. After her debut in Iron Man 2, she became a supporting player in the Captain America sequels and every Avengers movie so far. She will return in Infinity War and next year’s Avengers 4.

However, fans have also wanted to see the original Avenger headline her own standalone movie. Kevin Feige has talked about the idea over the years, saying he was interested in telling a solo Black Widow story. Now, it’s happening.

According to The Wrap, Blacklist screenwriter Jac Schaeffer has been hired to pen the Black Widow movie script, with Johansson attached to reprise her role once again. Schaeffer’s credits include TiMER and the Olaf’s Frozen Adventure short.

Variety adds that the film is still in very early development and doesn’t have the greenlight yet, but this is a big step forward. Marvel executives met with Johansson to discuss what they wanted from a screenwriter, which informed the search and Schaeffer’s hiring. No word yet on a director or planned release date.

Black Widow is the latest title we can expect from Marvel’s post-Avengers 4, joining Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and (unofficial for now) Doctor Strange 2. It would also be the third Marvel movie starring a female character, following Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel. Basically, it’s about time this movie has gotten some movement.

Stay tuned for more as we have it.
