BLACK PANTHER Shatters Expectations with Projected $235 Million+ Opening

[UPDATED with official numbers…..]

Marvel’s Black Panther was always going to be a big hit, but no one could have anticipated just how big. Its tracking projections kept climbing higher and higher, while the blockbuster has been fueled by rave reviews from fans and critics. Now, we have the estimated numbers for its opening weekend, and simply put, the movie is huge.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther is earning a massive $201.8 million over the three day weekend and $242 million over four days. This gives it the second biggest opening in superhero movie history, behind The Avengers‘ $207.4 million. Meanwhile, its opening four-days are the second biggest in history, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Overseas, Black Panther has earned $184.6 million through Monday, bringing its worldwide opening to $426.6 million. The movie has opened in every market worldwide except for Russia, Japan, and China. It will release in those nations later on.

Black Panther broke several records, such as the biggest February/Presidents Day opening in history and the biggest opening for an African-American director. Additionally, it is the fourth biggest pre-seller for advance tickets in Fandango’s history, behind only the last three Star Wars films.

Nobody could have predicted that Black Panther would have this much success. But it shows just how hungry people are for a new type of superhero film, cementing T’Challa’s long-awaited movie as a true event film.
