DC Movie News Bits: SHAZAM! Costume Tease, NIGHTWING Update, AQUAMAN Canon Change

With New Line’s Shazam! now undergoing production, fans have been anxious to get a first look at the DC hero’s costume. Now, director David F. Sandberg has offered a tease of what’s to come.

On a Reddit thread, Sandberg hinted at Shazam’s costume, comparing it to his suit in the Justice League: War animated movie. “The suit has some similarities to his look in Justice League: War. Once pics have been released I can tell you more about where the inspirations came from and why certain choices were made.” The War suit was based on the New 52 design, which included a hood. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long before we see it.

Shazam! is set to hit theaters on April 5th, 2019. The seventh installment in the DC Films Universe stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, and Ron Cephas Jones. David F. Sandberg directs from a script by Henry Gayden.

Recently, director Chris McKay offered an update on Nightwing, saying that the first draft is nearly complete. This joins a rumor that the film will soon be added to DC Films’ next wave of titles. However, a new update suggests that we have to wait a while.
According to The Tracking Board, Nightwing is currently not a big priority at Warner Bros. and DC Films. The studio is currently focused on a few other DC movies first, such as Flashpoint and Batgirl. So, Nightwing is still “years” down the line. This makes sense though, as McKay has been vocal about wanting to take the time to get the movie just right.
And finally, we have some new tidbits on the next DC movie, Aquaman. In an interview with Las Vegas Review-Journal, actor Dolph Lundgren talks about his character, King Nereus. He reveals that the movie will drastically change the relationship between Nereus and Mera. “Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard, who plays my daughter. She’s trying to convince me to join the right side. Then you have Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother. We’re trying to avoid war between the surface dwells and the people of Atlantis.”

In the comics, Mera and Nereus were engaged, and there was plenty of tension between the king and Aquaman. In the movie, however, not only is the relationship changed significantly, but it sounds like Nereus could be an ally to Arthur Curry and company.

Aquaman is scheduled to hit theaters December 21st. The sixth installment in the DC Films Universe stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ludi Lin, Patrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman. James Wan directs from a script by Will Beall.
