SILVER SURFER Movie Back in Development; Fox Accelerating Development of Many Marvel Movies

Despite Disney’s planned acquisition of Fox, the studio is still moving at full speed ahead with multiple Marvel-based movies, primarily in the X-Men franchise. Now, a new report sheds light on just how determined Fox is to exploit its properties before the deal closes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is intent on putting out as many Marvel movies as possible before the merger is finalized. Among these is another attempt at a Silver Surfer movie, this time written by Brian K. Vaughn. A script was first written in 2000, with the character later appearing in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. After that film, there were plans for a spin-off, which were ultimately shelved.

It’s also business as usual for movies that we already knew about. Noah Hawley is still making his Doctor Doom film, while Tim Miller and Brian Michael Bendis are teaming up for Kitty Pryde. Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix are out this year, with X-Force beginning production in October.

2019 will see the release of three movies (including New Mutants, which will undergo reshoots this summer to add a new character, and Gambit, which will turn in its script next month). There are three more films planned for 2020 too.

This report only cements Fox’s desire to continue in exploiting the X-Men and Fantastic Four brands while there’s still time. If a deal closes, the studio will likely be under Disney’s control next year. But, it’s also possible that the merger doesn’t go through. We’ll just have to wait and see.
