AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Tease Hawkeye's Role

Avengers: Infinity War has promoted countless superheroes in its marketing campaign, but one character noticeably absent has been Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. He wasn’t in the trailer, he hasn’t gotten any promo art (yet), and he doesn’t even have his own Twitter emoji. This led fans to speculate on why he hasn’t been marketed. Now, we have an answer.

ComicBook visited the set of Infinity War last year, and the site spoke with directors Joe and Anthony Russo on what to expect. Talk turned to Hawkeye’s role. Basically, it sounds like Clint Barton will have his own journey in the film, rather than be involved with the rest of the ensemble – which would explain why he hasn’t been marketed alongside the ensemble.

Joe says, “Hawkeye coming out of [Captain America:] Civil War is in the same position that the Cap and Falcon are in at the end of that movie. And Ant Man. And coming into this movie, the characters who are on Cap’s side coming out of Civil War, some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths and them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So, Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.” Anthony adds that Hawkeye has a “unique” reaction to the events of Civil War, and that will influence his “special” role here.

In the Infinity War comic book prelude, Clint is shown to be “officially” retiring from superheroics, opting to go back to his family instead. It’s likely we’ll pick up with him here in the movie. There have also been rumors of Clint adopting the Ronin persona in Avengers 4, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

The new Infinity War trailer will drop tomorrow, so tune in for the premiere. Also, click HERE to check out ComicBook’s complete set coverage.
