Kevin Feige Talks CAPTAIN MARVEL and Plans for BLACK PANTHER Sequel

Entertainment Weekly has an in-depth coverage of Avengers: Infinity War in this week’s issue. Included is a lengthy interview with Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, who offers some intriguing teases for some future films.

Feige shares some new details on next year’s Captain Marvel, which recently began production. When asked about the 1990s setting, Feige says they specifically wanted to depict Nick Fury’s first encounter with a superhero. “You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony [Stark], ‘You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.’ Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the ’90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite ‘90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

Feige also confirms that much of the film takes place in outer space, while some action is influenced by Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Hopefully we’ll learn more soon about Captain Marvel, which hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.

Meanwhile, Feige talks about the monumental success of the studio’s current release, Black Panther. To the surprise of absolutely no one, Feige says that a sequel is “absolutely” going to happen. “One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”

Not much else is known about the sequel, beyond Feige hoping that director Ryan Coogler will return. Marvel did recently announce a bunch of release dates for untitled movies, so one of those is likely Black Panther 2. (I’m still betting on it being the February 2022 film.)

As for the franchise’s long-term future, Feige says there’s “lots of potential” for Black Panther to go beyond the standard trilogy. He adds that we’ll be seeing plenty more of Shuri in the future.
