Review: SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES

What would happen if Lex Luthor became president of the United States and made Superman and Batman America’s most wanted? That’s the question Superman/Batman: Public Enemies attempts to answer. Does it do the World’s Finest justice or does fail miserably? Let’s find out!

The film picks up in the middle of the action. We learn that Lex Luthor has become president of the United States and the crime rate has dropped significantly. Things are going great… Aside from the giant kryptonite meteor headed straight for Earth. This film feels like it’s the finale of Superman: The Animated Series, and that’s both a good thing and a bad thing. On one hand, it makes the assumption that you know Captain Atom, Power Girl, and even Amanda Waller. Making hard for new viewers to understand what’s going on. On the other hand, it allows them to take full advantage of the shorter runtime.
The voice acting is strong; as usual when Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly play Batman and Superman. The animation is not the best we’ve seen in these DC animated movies, but it’s not bad. The highlight of the film is seeing Superman and Batman work together. They both had moments to shine, and they didn’t have to depower Superman or turn Batman into a god to do so. Seeing these come together will always be a joy to watch, and this time is no exception. DC’s pillars are two of the best characters in comics, and this film does them justice well.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies is a fun short adventure with the World’s Finest. It’s simple, but sometimes simple is okay. It’s a fun romp with characters we love. What more can you want?
