TV News Bits: THE BOYS, Y: THE LAST MAN, SMALLVILLE, RIVERDALE/SABRINA

The Boys, Riverdale, Smallville

Today in our TV news roundup we have word that Karl Urban will star in Amazon’s The Boys. The news is coming from THR, and the show has already been greenlit for a series. For those of you who don’t know, The Boys is set in a darker superhero world than we are familiar with. The story focuses on a group of vigilantes known as The Boys, heroes that takedown corrupt heroes. A premiere date has not been announced yet, but we should hear more in the coming months.

Next up, FX has ordered a pilot based on Y: The Last ManVariety is reporting that Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049, Logan) and Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage) will be showrunners on the DC project while Melina Matsoukas (Masters of None) will direct the pilot. Based on the DC Comics series of the same name, Y: The Last Man tells the tale of a post-apocalyptic world where all but one man is dead. The series has been in development hell for years, but FX is finally setting the wheels in motion.

Sticking with DC Comics, let’s talk about Smallville. Tom Welling (Clark Kent) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) were at AwesomeCon in Washington DC and spoke about the possibility of Smallville being revived. They weren’t too keen on wearing tights and going bald, but they would be up for an animated series! Welling said, “I mean, animated could be fun.” Rosenbaum added “That would be huge! I mean, Smallville: The Animated Series, with all the real voices? And I wouldn’t have to shave my head! We’ve got to do that. Can you imagine us on mics doing the same dialogue? Kryptonsite was the one to break the news, they all have the full panel so check that out. As for an animated adventure, how about Infinite Crisis? crossover with the Arrowverse, Vixen and Freedom Fighters. I would love to see that!

Lastly, we have Riverdale news! Producer Jon Goldwater kills any hope of seeing a Riverdale/Sabrina crossover (hey, I didn’t say it was good news). Goldwater told TVLine:“Right now, we’re not thinking about that, they’re two separate entities for right now.” The Sabrina spin-off made the jump from The CW to Netflix in December so that might have something to do with it, but that’s just pure speculation.

That’s it for today’s TV round-up. For more news on The Boys, Y: The Last Man, Smallville and Riverdale stay tuned for more news as it comes!
