New AQUAMAN Stills Reveal the Villainous Black Manta and Orm

Entertainment Weekly is exploring the world of DC Films’ Aquaman in this week’s issue. In addition to the covers we saw earlier, the magazine debuted several still images from the movie. Some of them offer long-awaited first looks at the film’s villains, Black Manta and Orm.

The Black Manta picture sees David Kane (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) working on his helmet, which is very faithful to the comic book version. However, Kane is a new name for him, as he was previously surnamed Hyde in the comics. And yes, he will shoot red plasma beams out of his eyes.

Director James Wan calls Black Manta a “part mercenary but full-time pirate,” and he wants to keep the character a mystery for the movie. While Manta will be an antagonistic force, he isn’t the main villain. That will be Aquaman’s half-brother, Orm. Wan tells EW, “Black Manta is a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story but our main story is about Jason [Momoa] and Patrick [Wilson].”

The two half-siblings face off in another still. In the film, Orm wants Atlantis and the surface world to go to war, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen. That closely follows his motivation in the comics, particularly the recent Throne of Atlantis arc.

EW has several more stills, featuring Mera, Atlanna, and of course, Aquaman himself. For the full gallery, click HERE.

Aquaman is scheduled to hit theaters December 21st. The sixth installment in the DC Films Universe stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Ludi Lin, Patrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman. James Wan directs from a script by Will Beall.
