SUPERGIRL Season 4 is Inspired by This Comic Book; [SPOILER] Leaves the Show

[Warning: The Following Contains SPOILERS From Supergirl‘s Season 3 Finale.]

Supergirl aired its season three finale last night, and it truly was more powerful than a locomotive. The episode was full of big plot twists, character deaths, and more. A big moment resulted in one fan-favorite character’s exit from the show.

TV Line has confirmed that actor Chris Wood, who plays Mon-El, has left Supergirl as a series regular. While the door is always open for Mon-El to return, the plan was always to have him for two seasons. Executive producer Robert Rovner explains, “We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”

Mon-El was introduced on Supergirl in the second season, mysteriously arriving in a pod on Earth. He went on to be trained by Kara, and the two fell in love. It was revealed that he was the Daxamite Prince, and later, he had to leave Earth. But there, Mon-El traveled to the future with a wormhole, married Imra, and came back as leader of the Legion of Superheroes.

In the season three finale, it was revealed that Brainiac-5’s distant relative – you know, THE Brainiac – made the future uninhabitable for all other AIs. Thus, Brainy stayed behind in the present to prevent that future. Meanwhile, Mon-El returned to the Legion – this time joined by Winn – and went back to the future.

But that’s not all. The finale ended with what looks to be a clone of Kara arriving in Siberia. Rovner confirms to TV Line that this sets up next season’s big story, which is inspired by Superman: Red Son. “For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics’ Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman.” EP Jessica Queller adds that season four is definitely a “homage” to this story, which is an Elseworld tale depicting a Superman born and raised in the Soviet Union.

It will be interesting to see how Supergirl tackles this iconic storyline next season. Stay tuned for more as we have it.
