SDCC TV News Bits: SUPERGIRL, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, CLOAK AND DAGGER, BLACK LIGHTNING, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Welcome to a special SDCC-themed installment of TV News Bits. Here, we’ll be going over new characters joining Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, a hit Marvel show’s renewal, and two other shows promoting characters to series regulars.

Supergirl Adds 3 to Cast
At San Diego Comic-Con, Supergirl announced (via KryptonSite) the addition of three characters, following Sam Witwer‘s casting. Actress Nicole Maines will play Nia Nal/Dreamer, TV’s first transgender superhero. Nia is a new addition to the CatCo reporting team, and she must embrace her destiny as the superhero Dreamer.
Meanwhile, the show has added April Parker Jones as new series regular Colonel Haley, a military woman who is very dedicated to her country and following orders. Lastly, David Ajala will play Manchester Black, a villain in Superman lore who uses his charm and humor to deflect his brutality.
Supergirl returns on Sunday, October 14th at 8 PM EST on The CW.
Legends of Tomorrow Casts New Hero and Nate’s Father
Legends of Tomorrow also promoted its new season at SDCC, and there (via DCLegendsTV), we learned about the addition of two to its cast. Tom Wilson, aka Biff Tannen from Back to the Future, will play Hank Heywood, Nate’s father. Hank is a part of a long line of Heywoods to serve their country, so he’s leaving big shoes for Nate to fill. Oh, and Nate can’t tell him that he’s a Legend.
Meanwhile, the show has added a new series regular in Ramona Young, who plays Alaska Yu. Alaksa is an expert in magical creatures, and after meeting the Legends, she goes on the path to become a superhero. Young joins new series regulars Matt Ryan, Jes Macallan, and Courtney Ford for this season.
Oh, and while Amaya left the team in the season three finale, Maisie Richardson-Sellers is still a series regular. How? Well, it was announced (via Comic Book) that she is playing a new character named Charlie, a “rebel without a cause” who is connected to the portal bringing in magical creatures.
Legends of Tomorrow returns on Monday, October 22nd at 9 PM EST on The CW.
Cloak & Dagger Renewed for Season 2

With all the other shows on break, Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger has taken over Freeform for the summer and recruited a fan following. Now, with the season’s last two episodes still on the way, an inevitable renewal has been confirmed.
At SDCC, Freeform officially renewed Cloak and Dagger for a second season. Like season one, this will run for 10 episodes. It has also been teased that Brigid O’Reilly will follow her comic book destiny and become Mayhem. But, we’ll have to wait and see on that. The season one finale airs on August 2nd at 8 PM EST on Freeform.
Black Lightning Upgrades Painkiller

Last season, Black Lightning introduced Khalil Payne (Jordan Calloway) as a love interest for Jennifer Pierce. A series of events led to Khalil undergoing a transformation and being pitted against the Pierce family, including Black Lightning. Well, get ready to see a lot more of him next season.
The CW announced (via TV Line) that Calloway will be a series regular for Black Lightning‘s second season. He will continue his evolution into the villain Painkiller. Showrunner Salim Akil had this to say at the series’ SDCC panel. “I’m thrilled to have Jordan upped as a series regular. He was a great asset to our show… during Season 1, and now that he has evolved into Painkiller, I can’t wait for you all to see him in Season 2.”
Black Lightning returns on Tuesday, October 9th at 9 PM EST on The CW.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gets New Regular and Director for Premiere

And finally, we got some good Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. details at SDCC. First up, Jeff Ward’s Deke Shaw has been upgraded to series regular for the show’s sixth season. Introduced last season, Deke was revealed to be the time-displaced grandson of Fitz and Simmons.
It was also announced (via EW) that the show’s season six premiere will be directed by star Clark Gregg. This will mark Gregg’s second directorial effort on the series; he did an episode last season too. Last season, Coulson was placed on the path to death once more, and with the finale ending on a cliffhanger, fans are wondering if this is the last we’ve seen of him. Gregg, naturally, is keeping things under wraps.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return sometime next summer on ABC.
