THE FLASH Confirms Cicada as the Big Bad for Season 5

A few months back, it was rumored that Cicada is going to be the main villain of The Flash‘s fifth season. Now, at San Diego Comic-Con, it’s official.

The CW announced during the show’s SDCC panel that Cicada will be the next big Flash villain, played by actor Chris Klein. Per the press release, Cicada is described as a “…grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans, Cicada now seeks to exterminate the epidemic – one metahuman at a time.” While he won’t be as much of a cult leader as he is in the comics, he will prove to be a real challenge for Barry and the team.

Also at the SDCC panel, showrunner Todd Helbing teased that a “lot of deaths” will be happening this season, while we will be seeing a younger version of The Rogues and maybe a team-up between Gorilla Grodd and King Shark. Additionally, episode 8 of this season – aka the series’ 100th – will be directed by Tom Cavanagh, and it will be the midseason finale. Traditionally, episode 9 of a season is the midseason finale, with episode 8 being part of a crossover event. How this year’s crossover will be affected by this change remains to be seen.
