TV News Bits: DC Universe, Marvel, and Beyond

We have a lot of updates for today’s TV News Bits. We have some updates on two DC Universe shows, a premiere date for the next big Netflix original, renewal of a hit spinoff, and more.

-AMC has renewed Fear the Walking Dead for a fifth season. The announcement was made during the network’s TCA presentation on Saturday. The series, a spinoff from the mega hit The Walking Dead, has been a solid summer performer for AMC. The show returns for its midseason premiere on Sunday, August 12th at 9 PM EST. (Source: TV Line)

-Netflix has announced that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will premiere on Friday, October 26th, just in time for Halloween. The first season of the Riverdale companion series will run for 10 episodes, and it is expected to be a darker take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Binging this one should be fun. (Source: TV Guide)

-Speaking of Netflix, it looks like the streaming giant isn’t off the Marvel train yet, despite Disney’s commitment to its own streaming service. At TCA, Netflix VP Cindy Holland says that there are always discussions on future Marvel spinoffs. The network originally ordered four original shows and miniseries The Defenders, while The Punisher was picked up as a Daredevil spinoff. Considering all the characters introduced so far, there are plenty of options for spinoffs. (Source: Comic Book)

Happy! star Chris Meloni recently teased that season two has begun production. The series, based on Grant Morrison’s comic, features a hitman who joins forces with his daughter’s imaginary friend, a blue unicorn named Happy. A premiere date for season two hasn’t been announced yet. (Source: Twitter)

Doom Patrol has made another casting addition. The DC Universe show has added Orange is the New Black alum Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, a hero who suffers from a severe case of multiple personality disorder. The series, a spinoff from Titans, will premiere sometime next year on DC Universe. (Source: TV Line)

-While we’re discussing Titans, we need to talk about THAT line about Batman in the trailer. Why would Robin ever say “F*** Batman” for any reason? Well, DC’s Geoff Johns has an answer. “…it does make you go, ‘Why is he saying [“F*** Batman”]?’ If you look at when Robin first left Batman in the comics, there was a lot of uneasiness and him being lost. Titans is really a series about these different characters that are all lost in their lives; just like the greatest comic book Titans run ever, by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, it’s about all these lost characters find one another. And they’re all struggling with something, and Robin is clearly struggling with his past with Batman. And we’ll learn a lot more about it and what that is and why he is the way he is.” This makes sense, I suppose. Titans premieres this year on DC Universe. (Source: Polygon)
