VENOM Smiles in New Movie Still; Director Ruben Fleischer Talks Horror Influence

As part of Entertainment Weekly‘s San Diego Comic-Con coverage, the magazine is exploring the world of Sony’s new Marvel-inspired movie Venom. And with that, we have some new details and imagery.

In an interview with EW, star Tom Hardy talks about shifting from supervillain to superhero (well, somewhat) for this latest role. He admits that Venom is the “coolest” looking Marvel character to him, but he also likes his swagger and attitude. More specifically, Hardy wanted to play a “hero” that had a complicated past and iffy morals.

Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer explain that with the Symbiote, Eddie Brock will be a reluctant hero, and the two have to learn to co-exist alongside each other. We heard before that Venom was going to be horror-influenced, and here, Fleischer elaborates. “We talked a lot about a werewolf and what it is when you get infected or bit by a werewolf.” Also, it looks like Venom will have a habit of biting peoples’ heads off, which will surely complicate things. As Hardy explains, “There’s that biting-off-heads issue, which is not what you would expect from, say, Captain America taking down a crook.”

In addition, EW has premiered two still images from the movie. One features Venom giving his iconic grin, looking like he was ripped out of Todd McFarlane’s artwork. The other one features Brock alongside Riz Ahmed’s villain, Carlton Drake. Check them out below, and for from EW’s coverage, click HERE.

Venom is scheduled to hit theaters on October 5th. The first installment of Sony’s Marvel Universe stars Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, and Woody Harrelson. Ruben Fleischer directs from a script by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner.
