BLACK ADAM Producer Offers Script Update, Teases an Edgy DC Movie

Last we heard on the Black Adam movie, star Dwayne Johnson suggested that production could begin in late 2019. Scribe Adam Sztykiel has been working on the screenplay, while a director hasn’t been hired yet. Now, we have a new update from a producer.

Seven Bucks Productions president Hiram Garcia tells Collider that Black Adam is “definitely” happening, and the scripting process is going well. He reaffirms that Black Adam was the character that Johnson was sold on years ago, while the plan to split this and Shazam! into two movies allow them to properly develop both characters.

Garcia goes on to hype up the movie for fans, promising that the wait will be worth it. “So where we are now with Black Adam is we just got our latest script. We’re doing some revisions on it. We’re extremely excited about it, the studio’s very excited about it. And I’m telling you man, as a comic book fan, when this thing comes out, it is going to be amazing. This is the fanboy in me talking to you, it’s going to deliver on the goods of everything you’d want to see Black Adam do, he’s going to be doing in this film.” He goes on to say that Black Adam is definitely not a boy scout-type, and that his edge from the comics will be retained here. “Especially when he’s got edge to him. Like, he’s not the boy scout superhero, he’s the guy that’s like, okay, you cross him? Well, I rip your head off, and then I move on to the next guy.”

Despite DC’s recent commitment to telling lighter stories, there have been a few exceptions. Joker will be a gritty character study, while Birds of Prey is targeting an R rating. So, it sounds like they’re allowing similar freedom for Black Adam. This is an ideal direction that should set it apart from Shazam! and other movies.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
