GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3: James Gunn Unlikely to be Rehired by Disney/Marvel

Over the past couple weeks, social media has been buzzing around Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn. After a bunch of offensive tweets resurfaced, Disney quickly fired Gunn from Guardians Vol. 3, a move that has spawned much debate. There are people who think Disney was right to fire Gunn, those who want him reinstated, and those who are in the middle. Even the cast of the Guardians franchise has been vocal about their desire to see Gunn return to the franchise.

According to Variety, Disney currently has no plans to rehire Gunn, despite the cast’s open letter. The studio cited how Gunn’s past behavior was in direct conflict with its family-friendly public image, and that still remains the case. Regardless of the actors’ personal feelings about it, they’ll likely show up for future films anyways; in fact, most of them are legally under contract to do so.

As for who will replace Gunn, Disney and Marvel are apparently in no hurry. They’re willing to wait for the right A-list director to come along. In fact, it’s possible they’ll push back Vol. 3‘s February 2019 start date – and presumed 2020 release – if need be. Meanwhile, Variety cites rumors of frequent Marvel collaborates like Jon Favreau, Taika Waititi, and the Russo brothers being considered for the job, but they are busy with other projects. So, Marvel will probably find a new director to work with.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more news soon. Stay tuned.
