Movie News Bits: Worlds of DC Edition

For today’s installment of Movie News Bits, we’ll be rounding up some recent developments from the world of DC. We have some DC Films news, casting for DC’s next animated movie, and even something on Joker.

  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II debuts as Black Manta in this year’s Aquaman, but the plan is for him to play a key role in future films. Will that include other DC movies outside of the Aquaman series? Here is what Abdul-Mateen II has to say on the crossover potential. “Well, yeah, I mean, this character, he’s all over the canon. He’s in Suicide Squad, we see him in the cartoons, we see him in Young Justice, we see him in… he’s all over the place, in way that he can get to his means to an end. Right, if you see Aquaman in Justice League, then, you know, it’ll make sense for Black Manta to say, “Hey! What you doing?” Pop his head in, wherever he is, he can justify making it his business. I’m looking forward to living long within the DC world, and create a little bit of chaos.” Aquaman hits theaters on December 21st. (Source: Collider)
  • The Death of Superman is out now, and it heavily teases the second part of this story, Reign of the Supermen, which arrives early next year. Actor Cameron Monaghan, who plays both Jerome and Jeremiah/the future Joker on Gotham, has joined the voice cast of the animated movie as Kon-El, aka Superboy. In the comics, Kon-El is one of the four Supermen to emerge, claiming to be the resurrected Man of Steel. The movies’ producers have said that this adaptation is much closer to the comics than 2007’s Superman: Doomsday, so we’ll probably see something like that here. (Source: Instagram)
  • Actor Joe Morton played Silas Stone in Justice League, and he has talked about reprising the role for a potential Cyborg movie. Recently, he reaffirms that the film is supposed to shoot in 2020, but he hasn’t seen a script, so who knows. He also confirms that Justice League completely changed Cyborg’s story, and that the deleted scenes could end up in the solo film. As for what those scenes contained, Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan says that Silas Stone was originally killed off halfway through the movie, but he left a video for Victor at the end. His lines in the video were later given to Lois Lane for the film’s closing montage. (Source: /Film)
  • And finally, we have an update on Joker, which is DC’s first non-canon movie for a new label. The film is expected to begin production on September 22nd, with the plan to wrap around December-February. Unsurprisingly, it sounds like the movie is targeting an R rating. Why? Well, some smaller female roles are said to include nudity. It’s possible that the film will feature strip clubs, but that’s unconfirmed. Joker hits theaters on October 4th, 2019.
