Possible New Details on BIRDS OF PREY’s Black Canary; Onyx Adams May Appear

DC’s Birds of Prey movie is currently casting several fan-favorite characters, including Black Canary. This week, we have a new report shedding light on her characterization, while a rumor may reveal another character in the film.

Apparently, Birds of Prey may cast a biracial actress as Black Canary. Obviously, things can change, as an actress hasn’t been cast yet, but the studio is interested. This version of the character is a “world-weary” hero who has the ability to sing. Lady Gaga was rumored to have turned down a role in the movie, and it’s possible that this was it.

Typically, Black Canary has been portrayed as white in comics, animation, and live action television. The one exception is Arrow‘s current Canary, Dinah Drake (played by Juliana Harkavy), who is of mixed race. Going with a diverse hire for Birds of Prey would make Black Canary’s big screen debut even more unique.

In other news, another rumor claims that the film will feature Onyx Adams, a highly trained martial artist who is traditionally a member of the League of Assassins. Her exact role in the movie is unconfirmed, but this marks the character’s second live action portrayal, following an episode of Arrow last season.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it. Birds of Prey begins production in January.
