SUPERGIRL Movie in the Works at Warner Bros. and DC Films

As Warner Bros. continues to restructure its DC Films slate, yet another title has been put into development.

22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox scribe Oren Uziel has been hired to write a new movie starring Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. The project is in very early development (directors aren’t being approached yet), but this comes at an interesting time for Superman on film.

After starring in three movies, Henry Cavill’s Superman has been waiting for another solo film. But with his three movies getting polarizing reception and Cavill’s new contract negotiations with WB not finalized, fans have wondered what’s next for the franchise.

Well, Supergirl could create a new way back into the Superman franchise. While it’s unknown if the Man of Steel will show up here, he traditionally plays a very crucial role in Supergirl’s origin. So, it’s hard to make the movie without him being involved somehow. Not to mention, a Man of Steel Easter egg referenced Kara Zor-El, who was the star of a movie prequel comic.

This will mark the latest live action portrayal of Supergirl. She got her first movie in 1984; while the first major film based on a female DC hero, it’s also one of DC’s most critically panned movies ever. Kara also appeared on Smallville. Most significantly, Melissa Benoist plays the Girl of Steel in The CW’s Supergirl series, one of the network’s biggest shows right now.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
