“Bye, Felicia” – Netflix Cancels LUKE CAGE

Fresh on the heels of Iron Fist‘s mortalization, another hero had his bulletproof exterior shattered.

Late Friday evening, Netflix and Marvel Television announced that Luke Cage would not be returning for its third season.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” the companies said in a statement. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Cage’s small screen journey started as a supporting role in Jessica Jones, before branching off into a solo series and The Defenders crossover. After a high degree of critical acclaim, the cancellation was unexpected, and people are openly wondering what went down. Did the coffee spill over? Was there one-too-many dabs? Was the Christmas spirit nowhere to be found?!

Word on the street from Deadline is that Marvel and Netflix ran into creative differences over the story, even as Cheo Hodari Coker’s writers room were deep into development on Season 3. Money problems and the end of Disney’s Netflix partnership no doubt played a factor also.

On the heals of Iron Fist‘s cancellation, there’s already heavy speculation from the Twitter circuit that the two characters could see a reunion in a Heroes for Hire spin-off. Goodness knows we’d watch the heck out of that that.
