VENOM Sets New October Record with $80 Million Opening Weekend

Despite negative reception from critics, audiences seem to be more on board with Sony’s Venom. The film, which is intended to launch Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC), has been tracking higher and higher for a big opening weekend. And now, the early estimates are in.

Venom opened with $80.3 million this weekend. This easily sets a new record for an October opening, surpassing 2013’s Gravity ($55.7 million). It also comes ahead of Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born, which too exceeded expectations with $42.9 million.

Overseas, Venom took in $125.2 million, bringing its worldwide debut to a whopping $205.5 million. This alone doubles the film’s production budget, and assuming that its leg hold up over the next few weeks, it should be a very profitable venture for Sony.

Speaking of legs, it’s still possible that poor word-of-mouth will lead to Venom collapsing in subsequent weekends, despite a big opening. (See Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.) It all depends on how audiences respond to it. But so far, audiences have been fairly positive, and it looks like the SUMC is in full swing.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as we have them.
