SONG REVIEW: “Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)” by Post Malone & Swae Lee

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is less than two months away, waaaaah?!

The film’s tie-ins are starting to drop, and at last we have the theme song for Mile Morales’ first theatrical outing. How is this collab between Post Malone and Swae Lee hold up? Let’s find out….

This track takes the form of a love song, which is intriguing for a movie about a bunch of Spider-Men and Women and Hams teaming up. The subject of the song is referred to as sunflower numerous times by Swae and Post:

Then you’re left in the dust, unless I stuck by ya
You’re the sunflower, I think your love would be too much
Or you’ll be left in the dust, unless I stuck by ya
You’re the sunflower, you’re the sunflower

But honestly? This song just leaves me feeling empty. It’s sweet and saccharine without an emotional punch to make it memorable. Only the second verse gives us some clues as to the meaning of the song:

Every time I’m leavin’ on ya (Ooh), you don’t make it easy, no (No, no)
Wish I could be there for ya (Ooh), give me a reason to (Oh)
Every time I’m walkin’ out (Oh), I can hear you tellin’ me to turn around (Oh, oh)
Fightin’ for my trust and you won’t back down (No)

Best I can tell, this film will feature a romantic subplot. Comics watchers can probably guess whom that involves, but I’ll just tell you up front: don’t watch the music video if you don’t want to know. It’s a clear cut spoiler that’s not been shown in any trailers, and yet Sony feels the need to show it in the music video, otherwise the song doesn’t really feel relevant to the movie it’s based on. If you wanna go into the film fresh, steer clear.

So, I mean, yeah. “Sunflower” is fine. It’s catchy enough. It doesn’t have a lot of staying power, but at least Post Malone doesn’t rhyme “Sunflower” with “hourrrrrrrrrrrr,” so it’s got that going for it 🙃
