Box Office Updates: Aquaman and Deadpool Go Into the Spider-Verse

Two superhero movies took on the domestic box office this week, while another continues its reign overseas and in preview screenings.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened with $35.4 million this weekend – a solid start for the universally acclaimed animated movie. The film took in another $21 million overseas, bringing its worldwide debut to $56.4 million. Into the Spider-Verse was produced with a $90 million budget (not counting marketing), so it should easily turn a profit, especially with strong word-of-mouth and holiday legs.

Once Upon a Deadpool opened last week, and it has taken in nearly $4 million over five days. The film is a PG-13 recut for Deadpool 2, with $1 for every ticket being donated to “Fudge Cancer.” The rest of its box office gross will be added to Deadpool 2‘s total. It will conclude its run on December 24th.

Aquaman doesn’t hit domestic theaters formally until Friday, but the film has already been taking the rest of the world by storm. In its second week, the DC epic took in another $126.4 million, bringing its international total to $266.4 million. This is fueled by its success in China, where it is already the highest grossing DC film of all time. It will hit other markets this week. Additionally, Aquaman took in $2.9 million from its Amazon Prime-exclusive screenings on Saturday night, which is super solid. We’ll see how its main domestic opening fares this weekend.
