The 2018 WOBAM! AWARDS (Film)

Welcome to the second annual WOBAM! Entertainment Awards! Where the staff here at WOBAM give their thoughts on the best of the best from the past year. We’ll be ranking the likes of best actor, best picture, and best television series in geekdom. So, without further ado, let’s get started.

Best Actor

Josh Brolin as Thanos (Avengers: Infinity War)

Runners-up:

  1. Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)
  2. Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Infinity War)
  3. Shameik Moore (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse)
  4. Jason Momoa (Aquaman)

Josh Brolin takes the award for best actor. His work as the Mad Titan in Avengers: Infinity War is easily some of his best work. Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) gave him a run, but Brolin pulled ahead by just one vote!

Best Actress

Zoe Saldana as Gamora (Avengers: Infinity War)

Runners-up:

  1. Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther)
  2. Amber Heard (Aquaman)
  3. Evangeline Lilly (Ant-Man and the Wasp)
  4. Emilia Clarke (Solo: A Star Wars Story)

Zoe Saldana Story stole the show with her work in Avengers: Infinity War. Playing the daughter of Thanos, Saldana had to give it her all, and she certainly did. Gamora knows more about Thanos than anyone else, making her the film’s most important character outside of the Titan himself. We had yet another time with Lupita Nyong’o with the same average score, but Saldana lead by just one first-place vote.

Best Supporting Actor

Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger (Black Panther)

Runners-up:

  1. Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity War)
  2. Jake Johnson (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse)
  3. Josh Brolin (Deadpool 2)
  4. Winston Duke (Black Panther)

Michael B. Jordan was the real star of Black Panther. Every single scene he was in, he was the center of attention. He brought this new level of intensity and a sense of morality that a Marvel has never had. He played the character to where you were almost rooting for him to win. That takes skill when you’re playing a character who wants to start a war.

Best Supporting Actress

Danai Gurira as Okoye (Black Panther)

Runners-up:

  1. Letitia Wright (Black Panther)
  2. Nicole Kidman (Aquaman)
  3. Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2)
  4. Hailee Steinfeld (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse)

Black Panther had one of the best all-around casts of any film in 2018. With that said, Danai Gurira was special. Playing off of Chadwick Boseman, Gurira managed to make her mark on a film that was full of talent. Okoye is a strong warrior that can go against the best of them, and Gurira is no different.

Best Director

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War)

Runners-up:

  1. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther)
  2. James Wan (Aquaman)
  3. Rodney Rothman, Robert Persichetti, and Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into Spider-Verse)
  4. Ron Howard (Solo: A Star Wars Story)

One film has to wrap up a 10-year storyline, assemble one of the biggest cast in the modern age, focus on a villain that they built up for six years, and make sure they set things up for future installments. The Russo Brothers did the impossible; they not only made Avengers: Infinity War a watchable film, they made it one of if not Marvel’s best.

Best Picture

Avengers: Infinity War

Runners-up:

  1. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
  2. Black Panther
  3. Aquaman
  4. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Avengers: Infinity War is a film 10 years in the making. It’s everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it delivered in spades. Infinity War if akin to the Epics of old. The Russo’s made a movie that will be remembered for years to come.
