WONDER WOMAN 3 Will Have a Contemporary Story

With Wonder Woman 1984 still a year away, director Patty Jenkins has already teased an inevitable third movie. While it’s not a definite thing yet, Jenkins says that she has plans for how Diana’s arc will end in her trilogy. Now, the filmmaker has offered some more details.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at Sundance, Jenkins says that her plan is for Wonder Woman 3 to be set in the present day, and not be another period piece. “I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go? You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.”

One character who probably won’t be back? Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Pine says that to his knowledge, Trevor’s story is done. After Trevor died in the first Wonder Woman, he is mysteriously back for 1984. However, it makes sense to end his story there.

Wonder Woman took place during the World War I era, with 1984 fast-forwarding to the 1980s. While her solo films have been period pieces, the character has been a part of the present in Batman v Superman and Justice League.

Speaking of Justice League, Jenkins shares her thoughts on whether she’d be interested. Basically, she doesn’t want another Justice League movie anytime soon, and DC should continue to focus on individual heroes instead. But, “Never say never…”

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.

Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 5th, 2020. The ninth installment of the DC Films Universe stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal. Patty Jenkins directs from a script that she wrote with Geoff Johns and David Callaham.
