BLACK PANTHER Wins Three Oscars, SPIDER-VERSE Wins Best Animated Feature

Marvel was well represented at last night’s 2019 Academy Awards. Black Panther was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up for Best Animated Feature. Finally, Avengers: Infinity War was nominated for Best Visual Effects. So, how did these movies fare?

Out of seven categories, Black Panther won in three: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Song, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing. Black Panther is the first Marvel Studios movie to ever win an Oscar. With one movie, the MCU’s Oscar total went from zero to three.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took home Best Animated Feature. It beat competitors like Incredibles 2 for the award. Given the film’s universal acclaim, it would have been surprising if Spider-Verse didn’t win. This was the only category that the film was nominated for.

Unfortunately, despite its box office success and pop culture impact, Avengers: Infinity War didn’t take any awards. It lost Best Visual Effects to Damien Chazelle’s First Man. But considering how many strong contenders were in that category, there were no wrong answers.
