Marvel’s SHANG-CHI Sets Director, RED SONJA Drops Bryan Singer

We have a couple of director updates in the world of comic book movies. Marvel StudiosShang-Chi film has recruited a director as it hits the fast track. Meanwhile, the controversial Red Sonja reboot has apparently dropped its director.

Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) has signed on to direct Shang-Chi for Marvel. Cretton was chosen over directors
Justin Tipping (Dear White People), Alan Yang (Master of None), and Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones). Dave Callaham is writing the script.

Shang-Chi is Marvel’s latest shift towards a more diverse slate of superheroes. The film is expected to have a largely Asian-American and Asian cast. This comes in the wake of Captain Marvel and Black Panther‘s massive box office success. The trend will continue with The Eternals, which may have Marvel’s first gay lead, and the Black Widow movie, among others.

Stay tuned for more on Shang-Chi and all things Marvel as we have it.

Next, we have an update on Millenium’s Red Sonja reboot. The film caused outrage last year when Bryan Singer was hired to direct. Given Singer’s sexual assault allegations, this was a bizarre choice, to put it lightly. In fact, we at WOBAM! Entertainment decided not to cover Red Sonja so long as Singer was involved. And it appears that the film has dropped him.

Millenium head Avi Lerner has shifted gears in his decision to let Singer direct Red Sonja. He previously pushed for Singer despite the allegations. However, Lerner then had trouble finding a domestic distributor for the film. As a result, he fired Singer.

Now that Singer is out, we will cover Red Sonja as we would any other movie. For all things on this film, stay tuned.
