Review: CAPTAIN MARVEL Vol. 1: Earth’s Mightiest Hero

Carol Danvers has a new codename and is determined to prove herself the best of the best! She’s forging a new future for herself as Captain Marvel, but finds that she still can’t walk away from a challenge from her past! It’s a firefight in the sky as the Banshee Squadron debut – but who are the Prowlers, and where has Carol seen them before? Witness her in blazing battlefield action that just may change the course of history! Then, the Avengers’ new Captain Marvel meets their old one – Monica Rambeau! But what’s Monica’s problem? Can they resolve it before a threat from the ocean depths attacks?

In Marvel Comics, Carol Danvers was originally the superhero Ms. Marvel. That changed in 2012 when she became the latest person to become Captain Marvel. Not only is she an Avenger; she’s one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe. Writer Kelly Sue Deconnick set the tone for Danvers’ reign in Captain Marvel Vol. 1: Earth’s Mightiest Hero.

This collection combines Deconnick’s first two arcs from her Captain Marvel run, “In Pursuit of Flight” and “Down.” The story takes a look at Carol’s origin story, her friendship with Monica Rambeau, time travel, and more. While it might be longer than your usual Marvel TPB, it packs a lot of punch, and the story is engaging throughout.

Deconnick’s writing is a perfect fit for Carol. She captures Captain Marvel’s legacy in the Marvel Universe in a way that both longtime fans and newcomers can enjoy. This book was my introduction to Carol Danvers as a solo character, and it had me on board from the beginning. “Earth’s Mightiest Hero” has multiple artists such as Dexter Soy, Emma Rios, and Filipe Andrade. They all fit the story well, and they each have a unique style.

If you’re looking for a comic to read before seeing Captain Marvel in theaters, I highly recommend Captain Marvel vol. 1 “Earth’s Mightiest Hero.” It demonstrates how great a character Carol Danvers is, and why she’s worthy of the Captain Marvel title. Whether you’re a longtime Captain Marvel fan or want an introduction, this book delivers.
