Review: AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

It’s no stretch to say that Avengers: Endgame is one of the most anticipated movies in history. Marvel Studios has been building up to this moment for 11 years, from the first Iron Man movie. These movies have been huge from the beginning. Anticipation skyrocketed even more after Avengers: Infinity War, which ended in a huge cliffhanger that saw the victory of Thanos and deaths of many beloved heroes. So, the hype for Endgame has been unlike any other film in recent memory….if not any film period.

It’s impossible to imagine something bigger than Infinity War. And it’s impossible to imagine a proper conclusion to a 22-movie saga that ties loose ends, while keeping the door open for more adventures. And it’s impossible to do all this and still make a legitimately GREAT movie. But somehow, Marvel has pulled it off with Endgame. It has shattered even my highest expectations and delivered an experience like no other.

My review of Endgame will be as vague as possible. I tend to avoid discussing spoilers in my review, and I will be extra cautious here. However, as other reviews have noted, it’s tough to discuss this movie in any detail without spoiling something. So, I will be much more vague than usual.

While Infinity War thrived on jaw-dropping action and universe-shaking events, Endgame adds to that by exploring deeper character work. The Russo Brothers do a fantastic job depicting the struggles of our heroes, and this leads to amazing performances from the cast. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner are the big standouts to me as their respective characters. But really, all of the actors are great. Josh Brolin‘s Thanos is once again a strong threat for the Avengers, and without going into detail, he isn’t a rehash of what came in Infinity War.

But when the action hits, boy does it hit. The third act may be the most epic thing I have ever seen in a movie, and no, I’m not exaggerating. The scale is every bit as huge as Infinity War, if not bigger. Throughout the whole time, I was at the edge of my seat, and on multiple occasions, I started screaming for joy – which I rarely do at movies. Every Marvel movie has at least some fan-service, but Endgame takes it to another level. Diehard fans are going to lose it.

As for the story…yeah, I’m not going there. The Endgame trailers have held a LOT back, and for good reason. There are a lot of twists and unexpected story moments that I never could have predicted. There is where I say that the less you know about this movie going in, the better. You will feel a wide range of emotions watching it. And that’s all I’m gonna say.

In conclusion, Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece of epic proportions. It is full of shocking plot twists, mind-blowing action, and stellar character work. Above all, it is a masterful conclusion to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe saga, and it will make you cry. Marvel saved its best movie for last, and an argument could be made for Endgame being the greatest superhero movie of all time.

A special thank you to Kevin Feige, the Russo Brothers, and everyone else involved with Marvel Studios for not just this movie, but many more movies. They created a sprawling epic of 22 films (and counting) that brought countless beloved characters to the big screen. This changed the world of superheroes forever, and its impact on the movie industry is undeniable. Thank you for everything.
