WOBAM! Entertainment’s 15 Most Anticipated Movies of 2020

Every year has been significant in the realm of hotly anticipated movies, and 2020 looks to be no different. Both Marvel Studios and DC Films are launching new installments, while prestigious filmmakers are releasing their latest movies.

It’s always a challenge to rank our excitement for so many movies. But today, we at WOBAM! Entertainment are listing the 15 movies we’re most excited to see this year…

#15: Last Night in Soho

Last Night in Soho is the latest movie by director Edgar Wright. Plot details are currently under wraps, but the film is said to be a psychological horror tale. It also boasts a strong cast headlined by Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, and Terrence Stamp. Not to mention, Wright has a stellar track record as a filmmaker, most recently delivering Baby Driver, one of my favorite movies of 2017. So, Wright’s return to the horror genre should be an exciting one.

#14: Scoob!

Scooby-Doo returns to the big screen in a new animated story. Scoob! shows us how the Great Dane meet Shaggy and the rest of Mystery Inc., along with the team’s greatest mystery yet. So far, the film looks like a solid take on Scooby-Doo lore. It injects the series with a new cast and animation style, but still looks to be true to what makes the franchise work. Also, Scoob! is intended to be the launching point of a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe. So, all eyes are on this one.

#13: Top Gun: Maverick

After 34 years, Top Gun finally has a sequel. Maverick takes place several decades after the original, with Tom Cruise‘s Pete Mitchell instructing a new generation of pilots. So far, the film looks to be an exciting continuation of the story, taking our characters into modern times. Plus, given Cruise’s recent track record with the likes of Edge of Tomorrow and the Mission: Impossible series, it’s hard to not be excited for his next blockbuster.

#12: Onward

Say what you will about its sequel track record, but Pixar almost always delivers with its original films. So far, that looks to be the case with its latest offering, Onward, which depicts a world of magic and mystical creatures. The story focuses on two elf brothers who are attempting to bring back their late father for a day, but they have less than 24 hours to do it. If the film is as heartfelt as past Pixar movies, then we may need to get those tissues ready…

#11: Halloween Kills

Since its release in 1978, Halloween launched several sequels, a reboot, and a sequel to the reboot. However, none of these films had the same impact as the original. That is, until 2018’s Halloween retconned all the other movies and served as a direct sequel to the first. It was a huge box office hit, so naturally, two more sequels are underway. If Halloween Kills retains what made the last movie work, then we should be in for another modern horror classic.

#10: Mulan

Disney has been pumping out live action remakes of its animated classics for years. While fan and critical reception have been mixed, the main constant is the huge box office numbers. So, it was only a matter of time for Mulan to get the treatment. The film has garnered some concerns for allegedly ditching the original’s music and the character Mushu. However, the potential is still there for a compelling live action take on Mulan. The original’s story is amazing, and it should translate to live action better than, say, a flying circus elephant or a pride of Shakespearean lions.

#9: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run

In addition to the long-running animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants has launched a successful movie series. Its third installment, Sponge on the Run, sees SpongeBob and Patrick on the road to recover a snailnapped Gary. This film seems to abandon its traditional animation style, instead taking a modern CGI approach. Besides that, this looks to be another solid SpongeBob story. Plus, Keanu Reeves is in this. I’m sold.

#8: The Eternals

In mapping out Phase Four, Marvel Studios is turning to perhaps its most obscure comic book property yet. The Eternals are an ancient alien race created by the Celestials, and they seek to protect humanity from the Deviants. The film boasts an incredible cast, headlined by Angelina Jolie and Kit Harrington. This should be a really unique entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the comic book genre as a whole.

#7: A Quiet Place Part II

John Krasinski‘s A Quiet Place was a huge hit in 2018, having a unique concept and becoming a modern horror classic. Of course, a sequel was inevitable. Part II promises to expand the world, with the Abbott family venturing into the outside world. Much of the original’s creative team are back, along with new cast members Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou. It’s hard not to feel excited for this one.

#6: Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow has been a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as an original member of the Avengers. While her modern-day story had a pretty definitive end in Avengers: Endgame, her long awaited solo movie will go back a few years. Black Widow takes place right after Captain America: Civil War, and it sees Natasha on a new mission that will finally shed light on her past. So far, the movie looks to be an exciting spy thriller, and it should be a solid start to Marvel’s Phase Four.

#5: Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

DC Films is kicking off the decade in style with Birds of Prey, which unites Harley Quinn with several female heroes. This movie looks to be a fun, colorful story, but certainly not one for kids. This marks the first R-rated film in the DC Films universe (Joker doesn’t count), and it seems to be a bloody, vulgar tale. This should set it apart from the other movies, and it continues DC’s trend of filmmaker-driven stories. Plus, Ewan McGregor is playing the villain. That alone has us hyped.

#4: Godzilla vs. Kong

The MonsterVerse has been building up to the ultimate monster mash, and it’s almost here. As promised, the film will see Godzilla and King Kong come to blows. As a MonsterVerse fan, it’s hard to not get excited by this. However, the film’s recent delay from March to November 2020 is a little concerning. Also, Godzilla: King of the Monsters really underperformed last year, leading to worries that audiences will continue to have cold feet about the franchise. At the end of the day, though, we’re seeing Godzilla and King Kong fight each other in a modern blockbuster. How awesome is that?

#3: Dune

As someone who has never read the Dune book or seen the original movie, I was surprised to rank this so high on my list. But everything about the new movie has made me ecstatic. Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors, and after Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, I will see any sci-fi epic he does. And him assembling an all-star cast? Under Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures? Sign me up now, please.

#2: Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman is one of the best modern comic book movies, DC or otherwise. A sequel is a no-brainer, and now, audiences are finally witnessing Diana Prince‘s next adventure. Set in, well, 1984, Diana deals with the arrival of Maxwell Lord and Cheetah, all while Steve Trevor is alive somehow. 1984 looks to be just as fun and heartfelt as the original, and it feels like a totally different movie at the same time. This should be another huge hit for DC.

#1: Tenet

Any year that Christopher Nolan has a new movie out, it’s going to be my most anticipated movie of that year. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. This time, Nolan is creating an action epic exploring international espionage and….time manipulation? Plot details are vague beyond that, but with Nolan’s creativity and a rock-solid cast, we don’t need anything else to be sold.
