Review: Batman: The Adventures Continue – Mentors

In the first story arc, we returned to the world of Batman: The Animated Series. Batman had to take on Lex Luthor and free Superman from a Robot prison. You can check out our review here. For the next story, Batman and the family have to take on Clayface, Firefly and encounter Deathstroke.

We follow along as the Bat-Family fight Clayface. Batman, Batgirl, and Robin try and stop the monster from destroying the Gotham theatre. Our mystery man watches and praises the boy wonder’s abilities from a distance. Jason Todd vanishes before being spotted, and a new fighter has joined the fray. Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, is here to help fight Clayface. Batman is suspicious of working with the mercenary, but Robin loves their new ally.

Bruce and Alfred warn Tim of the dangers of working with someone like Slade, but he doesn’t seem to take their advice. We later see that Slade wants to recruit Batgirl and Robin, Barbara respectfully declines, but Tim wants to work with Slade.

The two eventually team-up and face the anarchist, Firefly. Deathstroke and Robin make a pretty good team, but Firefly got a significant power boost since his last appearance appeared in The New Batman Adventures. While all of this is going down, Batman notices that someone has been watching them. We’re getting close to that Batman/Jason Todd confrontation I can all most taste it.

The two-part story ends with cliffhangers on all fronts. Will Deathstroke and Robin take down Firefly? Will Batman discover Jason Todd? We have to wait another two weeks to find out.

Overall this story was far and away more entertaining than the last. We spend time with Alfred, Barbara, Gordon, and focus on Robin. This felt like an episode of The New Batman Adventures. I loved the character interactions and the introduction of Deathstroke. The cliffhangers have me on edge, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
