5 More Superhero Actors Who Should Return to Their Roles

In the world of comic book movies, many actors have taken on the roles of superheroes. Some have had recurring roles that lasted years, some have had shorter runs, and some have only played their character once. But few can match the excitement of actors who return to their roles many years after their last portrayal.

Crisis on Infinite Earths brought back both Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Tom Welling (Smallville), while John Wesley Shipp reprised his role as the original TV Flash after two decades. Most recently, it was reported that Michael Keaton is eyeing a return as Batman in The Flash movie. The list goes on, but clearly, this brings a ton of new excitement to the table.

Below, we list five superhero actors who should reprise their roles in the future. We won’t be including actors who recently wrapped their runs, such as Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans.

Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man)

Andrew Garfield was the highlight of The Amazing Spider-Man movies. While the writing wasn’t always the best, his portrayal of Peter Parker was memorable and kept the films from being complete trainwrecks. It wasn’t surprising that Marvel decided to reboot again, but still, Garfield deserves another shot as the Web-Slinger. A third Amazing Spider-Man movie is unlikely, but how about a role in the Into the Spider-Verse sequel? Or even a live action Spider-Verse?

Wesley Snipes (Blade)

Wesley Snipes played Marvel’s Blade in a trilogy of movies. While the third film was a misfire, the first two were a success, helping bring credibility back to the comic book genre. A big part of this was Snipes. It would be great to see the actor reprise the role, ending his run on a high note. Mahershala Ali is headlining a Blade reboot for Marvel Studios, so a fourth Snipes movie seems unlikely. Still, with the MCU exploring the Multiverse soon, this would be a cool cameo to see…

Ron Perlman (Hellboy)

Ron Perlman played Hellboy in Guillermo del Toro’s two movies, earning rave reviews for his performances. The two were attached to a third film, but was cancelled because the studio wasn’t willing to give it a big budget. This led to the 2019 reboot, which (ironically enough) was a big flop. This is a longshot, but I would love to see del Toro and Perlman get their chance to make one more movie. It would provide closure to their story, and it would extend Perlman’s run by one more title.

Keanu Reeves (John Constantine)

Keanu Reeves played Hellblazer in 2005’s Constantine movie. While that film took a lot of liberties from the comics, Reeves’ performance was well received. Reeves has shown interest in reprising the role over the years, and the film did generate a decent box office revenue. With both Reeves and the Constantine character seeing a surge in popularity, why not bring him back? It can be a Constantine sequel, or maybe Reeves can star in HBO Max’s Justice League Dark series.

Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man)

Now, onto the big one. Tobey Maguire was the star of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, and he was attached to reprise the role for a fourth movie…until it got cancelled. Since then, Sony rebooted the franchise twice, moving it away from the Raimi series. Still, it’s hard to imagine a bigger event in an upcoming comic book movie than the return of Maguire’s Spider-Man. Most likely, it would be a Spider-Verse project. With Raimi directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, maybe he can squeeze a Spidey cameo in there? And this is the biggest longshot, but imagine how big a fourth Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man movie can be.
