5 More DC Movies That Should Get a Spinoff Series on HBO Max

Since its launch, HBO Max has added many high-profile originals to its programming lineup. Most prominently, DC Entertainment has been the source of some originals. These range from Doom Patrol (a co-production with DC Universe) to a Green Lantern series to even Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Most recently, it was announced that Matt Reeves’ The Batman is getting a spinoff series, focusing on the film’s Gotham City Police Department.

HBO Max will continue to add DC originals to its slate, and some can be rooted in preexisting movies. DC has an extensive film history, especially in recent years. Any of them can have a spinoff series that takes place in its respective world. The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is especially ripe for more television/streaming spinoffs.

Below, we list five DC movies that we want to see get a spinoff series on HBO Max.

Birds of Prey

While Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) received positive reviews, its box office was below expectations. In fact, any future franchise plans are surely in doubt. Still, the film can launch a continuation on HBO Max. While Harley has a big screen future in The Suicide Squad and potentially beyond, the Birds of Prey can headline their own streaming series. Even a solo series for Black Canary or The Huntress would be good.

Joker

Joker defied all expectations in 2019, bringing in over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and winning several Oscars. There has been talk of a sequel, if director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix want to do it. We’re not too crazy about a movie sequel, but what about a standalone story on HBO Max that happens to take place in this world? It can explore what led to Gotham’s decline, focusing on other characters and the corruption of society. Doing any kind of continuation risks tarnshing Joker‘s reputation as a stellar one-off, but again, if the right idea exists…

Man of Steel

Man of Steel featured Krypton’s destruction in its opening sequence, but fans have been left wanting to see more of this world on screen. There was a time where SyFy’s Krypton was rumored to be a prequel to Man of Steel, but that ended up being its own thing instead. Still, doing a Krypton series exploring how the planet ensured its own destruction would be very cool. It would expand Superman’s DCEU world a little bit, while it gives the opportunities for more Jor-El, General Zod, and more characters.

Constantine

2005’s Constantine movie starred Keanu Reeves as DC’s Hellblazer, and it spawned a decent box office intake and a cult following. Over the years, there has been interest in seeing Reeves return to the role. Currently, HBO Max is planning a Justice League Dark series, while a new Constantine movie produced by J.J. Abrams is rumored. It’s unknown if Reeves is involved with either project. If not, a separate project set in the world of his Constantine movie would be cool, whether it’s a spinoff or a direct sequel.

Superman Returns

This one is more of a sequel than spinoff, but bear with us. Brandon Routh’s Superman returned for The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, taking on a Kingdom Come-esque appearance. Fans loved this version of Superman, leaving them wanting more. With The CW’s DC slate full (including a Superman & Lois spinoff), HBO Max would be the perfect place for a Brandon Routh Superman series. The service would provide the appropriate budget for such a show, and again, it would bring in a ton of new subscribers.
