Welcome to The WOBAM Beacon newsletter! – February 19th, 2021

If you’ve been around WOBAM Entertainment, you know we’re all about pop culture and nerdy things. On The WOBAM Beacon, we want to be a beacon that shines brightly sharing all the nerdy things we love. Wholesome, healthy fandom is the name of the game; this newsletter is our way of building spaces that are positive and shuns hate.

A New Look!

Our new Editor-in-Chief Landon “Beallman” Beall has been putting the shoe shine on our website. We’ve got a cleaner, updated layout that makes it easier to find content on the site, and we’ve also got a really swag dark/light mode to make it easier on the eyes.

We have a broader “soft refresh” in the works for later this year; until then, we hope you enjoy our new look.

THIS MONTH ON WOBAM…

We’ve had a wealth of fresh content published this month. Our resident Flash reviewer Jason Thompson recently reviewed Seasons 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian, aka The Baby Yoda show. He brought his signature wit to those reviews, and they’re really fun reads.

Isak was busy too, with his review of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Fun fact: trying to review a two for the price of one game is not as easy as it seems, but he’s got us interested in picking it up if only for Super Saiyan Mario. Cat shines!

Paul talked all about the legacy Marvel characters he wants to see in the MCU. If Ben Affleck is in the Multiverse of Madness like Paul predicts, then our heads just might esplode.

On the eclectic side, Landon gave us his ode to The Weeknd following the footsteps of Daft Punk. It was a nice way to hype ourselves for that awesome halftime performance at Super Bowl LV.

Also this month were Landon’s reviews of Limetown (TV series) and Willy’s Wonderland. One of those stars Jessica Biel being the freakiest reporter ever and the other stars Nicholas Cage beating up killer animatronics and cleaning bathrooms at breakneck speed. No contest there.

Podcasts, Podcasts, Podcasts!

WOBAM crew members Brandon Alvarado and Isak Wolff have been hard at work over at The Amateur Otaku, releasing a whopping *SIX* episodes in a little over a week. Be sure to check out the awesome going on over on their show.

Michael Thomas and John Mathews have brought their podcast roaring back to life. Each episode of Mike and John At The Movies is a feast for the ears, and their most recent installments have covered WandaVision and the best movies of the worst year ever. It’s the best darn Christopher Nolan fancast on the interwebs, so take a listen.

Katie Rentschler’s got her own groove going on the Slice of Film podcast, where she recently covered James Cameron’s Aliens and Blade Runner: The Final Cut. Is Deckard a replicant? You’ll have to listen and find out. The Geek Ultimate Alliance podcasting network is building a solid lineup of shows like Star Wars Alliance and Super Civil Servants, and you can check them all out over on their website.

Mario-Francisco Robles continues to pump out the awesome over on The Fanboy Podcast. Mario covers a wide array of DC/Marvel news and scoops on his show, and it’s just nice to listen to a wholesome show where someone’s geeking out on your behalf. Take a listen to his latest here!

We also wanna give a shout-out to the Doing Good podcast. Doing Good is made in Landon’s neck of the woods, hosted by local pediatrician Dr. Becky Powers and local CBS affiliate news anchor Josh Smith. The two are close friends, and together with their kids they interview guests who are Doing Good in Johnson City, TN and the surrounding community. It’s such an uplifting show and you can listen to it here. The show’s is produced by Leighton Hart of Market Street Media, and if you like podcasting or production how-to’s you absolutely need to check out their website.

Shining the Beacon on Others

WOBAM is like that picture of Baghdad that everyone thought looked like Ba Sing Se: we’ve got our inner ring, then there’s the ring beside us, and then there’s the ring around us. And this is the part of our newsletter where we want to shine a light on the great happenings going on around us.

Quinn’s Ideas is one of our favorite YouTube Channels. Quinn puts out videos all about the lore of worlds like Dune, A Song of Ice and Fire, and even HP Lovecraft. Oh, and he’s a writer with a graphic novel nearing publication! He’s one of the most whipsmart YouTubers out there and you should check him out.

Our friends over at Geekly Goods are churning out content like there’s no tomorrow. Mr. Leo Rydel steers the ship with trailer reactions, reviews, and more. There’s literally new stuff all the time. We really enjoy the enthusiasm of Leo’s trailer reactions, and you can check him out over on his channel.

Full Circle Cinema is a pop culture site that started a couple years ago, and last month they put out this beautiful piece about The Journey Of Luke Skywalker. Now I know, everyone has strong opinions about Luke in The Last Jedi and The Mandalorian. But Luke’s character endures for a reason, and it was great to read someone appreciating the finer aspects of the character. Thanks, Danny O’Brien!

The Novice Cinephile has been working on his Black History Month review series. So far he’s covered Imitation of Life, Cabin in the Sky, and The Defiant Ones. Did you know Duke Ellington was in the movies? We didn’t, but the dude has an entire IMDB page which makes us wanna go watch some old movies. Duke Ellington was THE MAN, y’all.

Last but not least, we wanna share the latest video from Nando v Movies where he speculates on Pietro having a false identity in WandaVision. He makes some strong arguments laying it all out, so definitely check it out.
