Zack Snyder Comments on Cyborg’s Origin Story in the DC Extended Universe

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we saw glimpses of several future members of the Justice League. One of these is Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher. The character will appear in the two Justice League films, before getting his own spinoff film in 2020.

With Batman v Superman now in theaters, director Zack Snyder spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Cyborg’s cameo, the character’s origin story, and what it means for the future of the DC Extended Universe.

[Warning: The Following Contains Mild SPOILERS From Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.]
In Batman v Superman, Lex Luthor is collecting data on several metahumans, including Cyborg. The footage in question features a video diary from Dr. Silas Stone, whose son, Victor, had undergone a horrible accident, which resulted in the loss of most of his limbs. However, a shapeshifting box acquired by Stone went over to Victor and began to transform his body. Dr. Stone then shuts off the camera.

Zack Snyder confirms to EW that the box in question is indeed a Mother Box. “That’s the first glimpse of the Mother Box there. It was an agonizing birth.” Mother Boxes are supercomputers from New Gods lore, and they have strong connections to Apokolips and Darkseid. In the New 52, Cyborg’s origin led to him accessing a Mother Box. This makes him a key player in the Justice League’s battle against Darkseid.

Regarding the depiction of Cyborg’s origin, Snyder says, “I really wanted to show Cyborg’s birth because I feel like he plays such a strong part coming up, and I really wanted to give a sense of him. I really want [the audience] to know how far he’s come.” Especially if Darkseid is the villain in one of the two Justice League movies – I think it’s obvious he will be – then it’s easy to imagine what “strong part” Cyborg will play in the DCEU.
