New Details on DC Films, Its Filmmaker-Driven Approach and More

Last night, it was revealed that Warner Bros. has reorganized its DC movie slate into a new studio division, DC Films. The division will be co-run by DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns and studio executive Jon Berg. This move is an attempt to steer the DC brand into a more successful direction after the polarizing reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But how will DC Films work?

Deadline‘s article on this news sheds some light on the behind-the-scenes of DC Films, as well as how it will carry out its “filmmaker-driven” approach. Despite speculation to the contrary, this move is not a “reactionary” one by WB. The studio wants its approach to making superhero movies to be very different from Marvel Studios’, while DC Films is not a carbon copy of it. Additionally, Johns and Berg’s roles aren’t identical to Kevin Feige’s over at Marvel.

In their roles at DC Films, Johns and Berg will offer guidance and structure to building the DC Extended Universe. The two will continue to report to DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and WB’s Greg Silverman, respectively. Key decisions such as casting, specific story elements and aesthetics will be decided by each individual director. So, it looks like directors will have a lot of creative freedom at DC Films.

Also, WB and DC are indeed paying close attention to how fans and critics have responded to Batman v Superman. And they intend to be “responsive” in mapping out the DCEU. Hopefully, this change will build upon the strengths of Batman v Superman while also learning from the mistakes. Fingers crossed.
