Director Matt Reeves Talks THE BATMAN and What to Expect From The Film

It’s been almost five months since Matt Reeves joined The Batman project. The War for Planet of the Apes director has been plenty busy working on the third film in the acclaimed trilogy. Now that the film has wrapped up, and the interviews have begun, Reeves has finally spoken about The Dark Knight.

In an interview with New Trailer Buzz, Reeves says why he was attracted to Batman as well as what style the film might go for: One of the reasons I was drawn to it is, I had a similar fascination to Batman when I was younger that I had with The Planet of the Apes series, which I was obsessed with. And  I see a parallel emotionally between Caesar and Batman; in that they’re both characters who are tortured and trying to sort of, grapple within themselves to find a way to do the right thing. In a very imperfect and to some degree corrupt world.

Reeves went on to say: So it’s really that emotionality that I’m interested in. I want to do a very point of view driven [story]. In this film [War for the Planet of the Apes], and all the films is what I try to do in almost a Hitchcockian sense, is use the camera. Use the story telling so that you become the character, and you empathize with that point of view. And I think there’s a chance there’s a chance to do an almost noir driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view driven in a very very powerful way, that will hopefully connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart.

It certainly sounds like Reeves is taking a different approach to Batman than previous directors. Through all of Batman’s eight big screen appearances, and not one has focused on the detective side of the character. It’s exciting to see Reeves not only embrace something new, but also stay true to the character. It will fun to see how The Batman shapes up in the coming. I personally can’t wait.

Stay tuned for more news on The Batman as it comes.
