FEATURE: DC Entertainment’s Five Best Moments From San Diego Comic-Con 2017

DC Entertainment had another very successful year at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017. Warner Bros. showcased the next two DC films at Hall H with great trailers and cast/director appearances, while announcing more. Some exciting announcements for the future of the television world were made. And next year’s slate of animated features was confirmed.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of our top five favorite moments from DC’s time at Comic-Con.

#5: DC TV Casting Updates
The biggest highlights from DC’s television panels came in the form of big casting news. Arrow has recruited genre favorite Michael Emerson for an undisclosed role, and The Flash has cast Danny Trejo as a villain. Meanwhile, Supergirl cast Adrian Pasdar, Carl Lumbly, and more. Meanwhile, longtime characters Anatoli Knyazev, Captain Cold, and Damien Darhk are confirmed to return next year.
Every year, The CW’s Arrowverse continues to grow larger and larger. This year will be no exception, and a big part of that is including both beloved actors and fan-favorite characters. Expect more announcements on that front to be made throughout the year.
#4: Wonder Woman 2 Confirmed
Wonder Woman is the biggest movie of the summer (domestically anyways), and it has been acclaimed by both fans and audiences, giving the DC Extended Universe the word-of-mouth boost it needed. Considering the film’s huge success, a sequel is a no-brainer. Sure enough, at SDCC, Warner Bros. confirmed that Wonder Woman 2 is among the next wave of DC films.
We don’t know too much beyond that, however. Gal Gadot will return for the sequel, which will reportedly take place in the 1980s. While unconfirmed, it is likely Patty Jenkins will return to direct, and she’s already working on the story with Geoff Johns. Expect a release date and more details to be confirmed soon.
#3: Revisiting the Death of Superman
As usual, DC announced its slate of original animated movies for next year. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was confirmed, while a new Suicide Squad title was revealed. Most interestingly, however, DC’s revisiting a story that’s already been adapted in animated form: the death and return of Superman.
2007’s Superman: Doomsday told this story, but suffered from cramming a huge storyline into a 77-minute runtime. To rectify that, DC is retelling the story in two parts, designed to be more faithful to the comics. Death of Superman will be released later in 2018, while Reign of the Supermen will kick off 2019.
#2: Flashpoint is Coming to the DCEU
During the DC Films portion of its panel, Warner Bros. showed off the titles of various upcoming DC movies. Most of them were names we’ve known before – Batgirl, Justice League Dark, etc. – but there was one big reveal. It appears that The Flash movie will now be called Flashpoint, adapting the groundbreaking storyline for the DCEU.
For those who don’t know, the “Flashpoint” comic saw Barry Allen travel back in time to save his mother from dying. But in doing so, he completely changes the modern day timeline. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are at war with one another, Thomas Wayne is Batman, the list goes on. It also resulted in the creation of the New 52 timeline of the DC Universe. While it’s unclear just how much will be used in the movie, Flashpoint being added to the DCEU should be a pretty big deal.
#1: Unite the Justice League
And finally, we come to the crown jewel of the DCEU slate. Justice League dominated Warner Bros.’ panel, releasing a gorgeous Alex Ross-inspired poster and dropping a four-minute trailer. The trailer keeps the focus on our heroes uniting to stop Steppenwolf from destroying Earth in his quest to recover the Mother Boxes. We also see the slightest tease imaginable for Superman’s return…assuming that is Superman.
Justice League looks like an incredibly fun and exciting installment of the DCEU. Coming off of Wonder Woman, it’s clear that DC Films is now doubling down on the hope and fun factors, which should go over well with audiences. And WB did a fantastic job presenting the movie at SDCC, which puts it at #1 this year.
