Guy Ritchie Would’ve Liked to Direct SUICIDE SQUAD 2

After the success of Suicide Squad last year, Warner Bros. put a sequel into development. The Legend of Tarzan scribe Adam Cozad is working on the script, while the studio is talking to directors, including Mel Gibson. Now, one filmmaker has expressed interest in tackling the franchise, even though it probably won’t happen.

Director Guy Ritchie recently appeared on Variety‘s Playback podcast to talk about his new film, WB’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. During the session, Ritchie commented on the possibility of tackling a comic book movie, and he specifically named Suicide Squad 2 as a project he would have been interested in. “I quite fancy doing Suicide Squad 2, because I thought I could do a good job with it. I can’t do it because I’m doing something else. But I’ve felt I could really do something with that.” [Transcription via Batman-News]

That “something else” is likely referring to Ritchie’s next project, Disney’s live action Aladdin remake. That movie is expected to begin shooting later this summer, presumably for a 2019 release. It’s unknown when Suicide Squad 2 will undergo production, but either way, it sounds like there was a scheduling conflict with Ritchie.

Regardless, Ritchie would be a fine choice to direct a DC movie in the future. He is a talented filmmaker who has worked with WB on many tentpoles – the two Sherlock Holmes films, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.  (which stars Superman actor Henry Cavill and rumored Green Lantern contender Armie Hammer), and now King Arthur. So, it would make sense for him to reteam with WB on a comic book film – if not Suicide Squad 2, then maybe something else.
